I was born and raised in Orlando. Growing up as the youngest of five children, my parents both worked to provide for our family – my father drove a taxi cab, and my mother was a maid.
After graduating from Florida State University and initially working in accounting, I joined the Orlando Police Department, thinking I would stay for a few years and move on.
Instead, I loved the job and working with the community. I didn’t expect it, but this became the starting point for my career in public service.

I moved up the ladder in my career, holding just about every position in the department. I became the first African American to serve as Chief of Police in Orlando, was elected Orange County Sheriff, and served three terms before being elected Mayor of Orange County.
Now, I’m running for Governor to fight for the affordability, safety, and freedom of every Floridian.
From Tallahassee to Washington, D.C., Republicans like Ron DeSantis and Donald Trump are selling us out. Floridians deserve a leader who will work for them. I’m ready to do what I’ve always done – answer the call to serve by standing up for Florida families.
John, we can’t win this race and flip the Governor’s office blue without you on our team. Will you split a $10 donation between my campaign and Blue Amp Action today to become a Founding Donor?
