The fight against corruption is on our doorstep now, John.
Since the Citizens United decision by the Supreme Court over a decade ago, millionaires and billionaires have been funneling mountains of money into our elections, almost entirely unchecked. Most Americans across the political spectrum agree that this has been a disaster for our democracy.
So what can we actually do about it?
We have already executed the first phase of The Montana Plan, a brand-new legal approach built on top of 200 years of Supreme Court decisions that say states can stop giving their corporations any power at any time.
When we pass this ballot initiative in Montana, we create a blueprint for other states to make Citizens United irrelevant and curb corporate influence in our elections. (In fact, we’ve been fielding calls from red, blue, and purple states to be next in line!)
This idea is popular both here and around the country. 80% of respondents to the most recent national polling on the topic agreed with the statement: “anti-corruption rules strengthen our democracy and constitutional rights by ensuring everyone has equal political representation, regardless of money.”
About the same percentage of Montanans — nearly 80% across Democrats, Republicans, and independents — agree with our ballot initiative as written. It’s as simple as this: if we get on the ballot, we’re going to win.
Okay, the “first phase” is done, but what happens now?
We’re getting ready to launch an aggressive statewide canvassing campaign to collect enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. That means meeting Montanans where they’re at — from holiday markets to college campuses and more — for the next several months. We will be grinding every single day to get what we need and submit it to the state, and that’s where you come in.
Here in Big Sky Country, we need to be ready to hit the ground running, door to door, face to face, and community to community to get our neighbors’ signatures. To make a huge grassroots campaign like this happen, we need all the resources we can get! Please, consider chipping in $20, $8, or even just $3 today to fuel our fight:
We’re closing the door on financial corruption and undue corporate influence on our elections. Thank you for standing with us!
