American Dreamin’

These days, the American Dream feels about as real as pixie dust or Andrew Cuomo's chance of being elected to anything ever again. That is to say, basically non-existent.

According to our new polling, 73% of voters now think that achieving the American Dream is harder today than in the past. The top reason why? Say it with us… the cost of living. It’s not just the rent that’s too damn high — it’s everything, from the price of groceries to the price of health care to the price of an Apple-branded sock ([link removed]) for your iPhone ($230!!!).

This week, we were joined ([link removed]) by Rep. Chris Deluzio on DFP Insights, who had some choice words for politicians who have sold out working-class Americans for the top 1%.

“It cannot be business as usual in Washington while millions of Americans are struggling to afford rising costs. This moment calls for a bold, economic populism that fights and beats the villains that are ripping us off, stifling growth, and killing the American Dream. That means fighting back against corruption and corporate power. And it means showing Americans that we believe in a simple idea: work hard and play by the rules, then the American Dream is yours.”

“My economic vision is popular and grounded in patriotism. Sixty-three percent of Americans agree with this idea of patriotism: that ‘loving your country’ means ‘ensuring all Americans have a fair shot at earning a decent life.’ These ideas are linked.”

It turns out, being patriotic is more than just hosting one of the most boring parades in American history or choosing random bodies of water to rename. It’s about actually ensuring that all Americans have the chance to succeed.

As Rep. Deluzio writes, “No more spaghetti-noodle spines, no more corporate handouts, no more corrupt self-dealing. Democrats must emphasize, over and over, how they will take on the villains in our economy to lower the cost of living and then deliver on an American economy that rewards hard work.”

Damn right!

Here are some other highlights from DFP this week:

No ICE, please.

It feels like every day, there’s a horrific new story that comes out about the mistreatment and abuse of immigrants by ICE agents in the U.S. Combine that with ICE pepper-spraying ([link removed]) inflatable frog protestors (you do you, Portland), and folks are understandably feeling ([link removed]) that Trump has taken his mass deportations way, way too far.

In our new poll ([link removed]) , we find that voters are strongly opposed to a variety of ICE’s recent actions — including restraining children with zip ties during raids, roughly throwing protestors on the ground, or detaining legal residents when they go to court for immigration proceedings.

And we find that voters support a wide range of immigration policies, including requiring officers to visibly display their identities and prohibiting the detainment of children in ICE facilities.

Earlier this month, we went out ([link removed]) to the Broadview ICE facility to ask protestors about their feelings on Trump’s mass deportation efforts in their community. Their motivation to protest? “A real fear that we might be next,” and because “what [ICE] is doing is not of Christ.” To be fair, we’re not sure if Epstein’s best friend in the Oval Office has ever thought WWJD a single time in his entire life.
