Dear John,

This week, the longest shutdown in American history came to an end. On Sunday, the Senate released a so-called ‘deal’ to fund the government and end the shutdown that would put 24 million Americans at risk of losing their health care. This bill passed the Senate, the House and was signed into law by President Trump on Thursday night.

From cutting Medicaid by $1 trillion dollars, to refusing to extend the ACA tax credits – everything House Republicans have done this Congress has made health care more expensive. It already costs too much to be sick in this country – and House Republicans’ heartless health care cuts only make care more inaccessible.

Folks, we all wanted this shutdown to end. But this bill was not the answer.

That's why when it came to the floor for a vote, I voted no. I have said from the very beginning of this shutdown that I refuse to abandon the tens of thousands of Minnesotans who could lose their health coverage because of House Republicans’ unrelenting attacks on health care.

I voted against House Republicans’ so-called ‘deal’ because Minnesotans are asking their leaders to stand up to the Trump Administration and fight for them when it matters most. And I heard you loud and clear. It’s past time we address the affordability crisis in our country, and this bill failed to do that.

Minnesotans deserve better. And I won’t stop fighting for folks back home to be able to afford their lives. Not now, not ever.

Share YOUR story:

Open Enrollment for MNSure will remain open until January 15.

Republicans refused to come to the table to lower your health care costs – and folks across Minnesota are seeing their premiums increase.

If you or your loved ones are seeing your costs go up, I want to hear from you. Please share your story with me and my office here.

Here’s what else I was up to this week:

Hearing from our future leaders

Every year, I visit Mitch Snobeck's political science class at Eagan High School to answer questions about our government and share my experiences as a member of Congress.

It’s so important to get young voices involved in our democracy, and I was honored to hear from and speak to such a bright group of students!

Honoring MN-02's Public Safety Champions

This week, I honored the public safety champions in my district who work day in and day out to keep Minnesotans safe.

I'm deeply grateful for these unsung heroes who have shown a tireless commitment to ensuring community safety.

Investing in outdoor spaces

I was honored to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony for the Highway 13 Trail in Prior Lake today – for which I was proud to have secured $1 million in federal funding.

This trail will not only increase Minnesotans’ access to the outdoors and serve as a safe route for walkers, runners and bikers alike, but it will also increase foot traffic to local businesses – supporting Main Street and boosting our local economy.

Behind the scenes:

This week, in between votes, I got to hang out with two of my colleagues (and great friends) – Rep. Mikie Sherill and Rep. Lizzie Fletcher! I’m so proud of my friend Mikie for her election to the New Jersey Governor’s Office last week. I know she’ll do great!
