What is True Conservatism? (Freedom Focus)
Standing up for true conservative policies: Free trade, religious freedom, and smaller government. |
Greetings from all of us at Advancing American Freedom. As the government shutdown finally comes to an end, we’re committed to making sure Republicans refuse Democrat demands to continue funding Obamacare subsidies.
America needs genuine conservative leadership now more than ever — and AAF is proud to be at the forefront of meeting that call. This week, our work was featured in Newsweek, highlighting the growing impact we have on the movement.
The Future of the Conservative Movement The conservative movement has reached a pivotal point — many have become enamored with policies that lead to more government involvement and less American prosperity. If we want to capture the energy of the “New Right” and embolden the base, we must first remember what conservative values really are and where they come from. I joined All Things with Kim Strassel to discuss the next steps for our movement. Read more about the interview in the Wall Street Journal HERE.
President Reagan Believed in Free Trade President Reagan understood that Free trade with Free nations makes us more prosperous as individuals and as a nation. While President Trump has embraced protectionism in his economic agenda, Reagan stood firm in his conviction that America’s leadership in global markets depends on openness, competition, and trust between allies. Reagan used tariffs rarely — and never as a tool of isolationism. Yet today, we see attempts to rewrite that record, to contort Reagan’s legacy to justify the actions of our current President.
AAF Chairman Marc Short made it clear: Reagan’s free trade vision launched decades of American growth. As those who cherish his legacy, we must reject revisionist history and remember Reagan’s enduring truth — that free trade is a core part of conservative economic policy.

Fortunately, there is hope for the administration’s economic future. In the last few days, we’ve seen the President acknowledge that tariffs have in fact been raising prices on thousands of goods — something we’ve been warning about since the beginning. As rollbacks start to take shape, we call on the administration to move forward by reversing harmful tariffs and reigniting free trade with our allies.
Standing up for Ukraine's Kidnapped Children This week, AAF Senior Advisor Paul Teller highlighted one of the most shocking and disturbing tragedies of the Russia-Ukraine War: Russia’s kidnapping of Ukrainian children. Putin recognizes that Russia’s easy access to abortion has led to a dwindling birthrate. As a result, the Kremlin has kidnapped tens of thousands of Ukrainian children — indoctrinating them with radical propaganda that positions them against their homeland.
A core part of the conservative movement is the idea that we are pro-life — for those born and unborn. We applaud First Lady Melania Trump’s diplomacy in calling out Vladimir Putin and helping to bring eight children home. We must continue to fight against these horrific kidnappings until every child is safely returned.

Marc Short on the Economy and Tariffs The President’s economic team has abandoned conservative trade principles in favor of broad-based tariffs and state-owned enterprises. As AAF Chairman Marc Short explained on Meet the Press, it’s time for President Trump to replace his economic team and start over with an agenda pursuing Free Trade with Free Nations.
Tariffs are Preventing an Economic Renaissance In Trump v. V.O.S. Selections Inc., the Supreme Court faces a pivotal question: will America remain faithful to the Constitution’s clear separation of powers, or allow presidents to tax the people without congressional consent? As your fellow AAF supporter Ed Schweitzer emphasized in the Washington Times, true prosperity doesn’t come from presidential edict or protectionism—it comes from free enterprise, open markets, and the hard work of the American people. Congress must reclaim its constitutional authority over taxation and trade so that our economy can thrive without suppression once more.

Democrats refused to keep the government open so they could attempt to force Republicans to bail out the failing system of Obamacare. After fifteen years, the program has continued to cause price increases and add to our national debt.
Earlier this year, AAF released a memo detailing why Republicans must vote NO on renewing Obamacare subsidies. We continue to push against the extensions and encourage conservatives to develop and offer a beneficial alternative for Americans.
Are You Considering a Year End Gift? Thank you for your support for AAF’s mission to promote and defend the ideas that have made this nation great - free markets, traditional values, and strong American leadership abroad. Did you know we have a sister 501(c)(3) organization called Advancing American Freedom Foundation that accepts tax deductible gifts?
Several donors have asked about different options as they are considering year-end gifts. We ask you to consider a special, year-end, tax-deductible gift given how important it is to stand firm for our shared values. Watch a video about AAF’s vision here.
