The deadly incident happened around 7 p.m Wednesday on Vernon Avenue near Avalon Boulevard in South L.A., according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Investigators say the motorcycle rider slammed into a bicyclist and then took off. The victim, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police spent the night looking through surveillance video and talking to witnesses in the hopes of tracking down the rider responsible. ABC 7 Police bust ‘puppy mill’ operating in Skid Row homeless encampment The Los Angeles Police Department rescued more than a dozen sick and emaciated dogs and puppies from a homeless encampment in Skid Row Thursday morning. Described as an “unlawful puppy mill,” the animals were found by members of the LAPD Heavy Metal Task Force, a unit which typically investigates metal and copper wire thefts across the city. While conducting an operation at the homeless encampment, officers found 14 sickly dogs and puppies and immediately removed them from the scene. Police say they were “booked as evidence, and will receive necessary medical treatment.” The owner of the the dogs was also found to be wanted on a felony warrant and was taken into custody and could face potential new charges for animal abuse and neglect. A social media post from the LAPD said the department “will not tolerate sidewalk breeding or the serious neglect of these animals.” Officials said officers from both the Police Department and LA Animal Services are making “significant strides” in working with lawful pet owners in Skid Row and investigating cases of animal abuse or neglect. KTLA 5 Molotov cocktail thrown at apartment door in Watts, police say An investigation is underway after someone threw a Molotov cocktail at an apartment door in Watts overnight. Police responded to an apartment complex on 92nd Street just after 2 a.m. Thursday and managed to extinguish the fire before it spread in the apartment or other units, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. Only the apartment door was damaged by the fire. No injuries were reported. Police could not provide information on a possible suspect or motive behind the incident. ABC 7 Los Angeles police pursue suspects who stole their mom's car Los Angeles Police Department officers and family members pursued two kids who allegedly stole their mom's car. Officers started chasing the silver Ford Fusion through surface streets in Mid City, Beverly Hills, into West Los Angeles, onto the northbound 405 Freeway, ultimately ending in a Reseda residential neighborhood. The driver varied between controlled and reckless driving, reaching speeds up to 60 mph on surface streets and driving on the shoulder of the 405 Freeway. The driver exited the freeway and moved onto surface streets in the San Fernando Valley. While in Reseda, a white Dodge Durango started chasing the suspect until he crashed into a curb near Hesperia Avenue and Vanowen Street. The driver and passenger ran out of the car, and both were quickly detained by police. LAPD said the occupants of the white Dodge Durango were family members of the suspect. CBS 2 Stolen vehicle pursuit ends at apartment complex in Woodland Hills Officers were chasing a stolen vehicle driver in the San Fernando Valley Thursday evening. NewsChopper4 was over the pursuit around 5:15 p.m. as multiple LAPD squad cars trailed the vehicle in the Lake Balboa area. The driver reached speeds of over 80 mph on surface streets, often swerving in and out of lanes in opposite directions. The reckless driving continued in Reseda, with the driver nearly hitting a pedestrian in a residential neighborhood. LAPD units pulled off the chase due to the dangerous speeds and monitored with their airship as the driver made their way onto the westbound 101 Freeway. The driver got off on De Soto Avenue and pulled into a parking structure at an apartment complex in Woodland Hills, where they abandoned the vehicle. It's unclear if any arrests were made. NBC 4 Burglar caught on camera as 6 San Fernando Valley businesses were targeted Thursday morning A bicyclist is caught on camera shattering glass and breaking into several businesses sometime early Thursday morning in Valley Village and North Hollywood. Six businesses in all were burglarized in the morning hours, and the Cara Vana coffee shop in North Hollywood appears to have been the first business targeted. Security video shows a person ride up to the business on a bike and use a small device to break the window. When it didn't shatter, the suspect came back a few minutes later and tried again. "He had a mask on, on his bike, backpack, so obviously he knew what he was doing," Kim Lopez of Cara Vana said. She said the coffee shop is a family business, and now they have to pay thousands of dollars to get the glass fixed. About one hour later, a mile and a half away on Burbank Boulevard, a burglar on what appears to be the same bike breaks into a sushi restaurant, stealing cash and leaving a mess. David Bitton has owned Le Sushi for decades, and found the mess when he arrived to work. "All the glass all over the floor, we called the police, they respond right away," he said. CBS 2 BWC: 18-year-old suspect shoots at Michigan officers as they approach him to discuss stolen firearm A man who exchanged gunfire with Grand Rapids police is now charged with attempted murder. Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker announced the charges Thursday, Nov. 13 against the 18-year-old man. He is charged with seven felonies, including two counts of attempted murder, resisting and opposing police, felony firearm and carrying a concealed weapon. Grand Rapids police released bodycam and dashcam video of the encounter Wednesday. Officers were patrolling around 1:40 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, near Blaine Avenue SE and Adams Street SE when they noticed a man walking in the area, Grand Rapids police Chief Eric Winstrom told reporters at a press conference Wednesday. Investigators wanted to speak with the man about a stolen firearm. The man was familiar to police, Winstrom said. After police tried to talk to him, the man began to walk away from the officers. He then abruptly turned around and fired at least four gunshots at officers. Police returned nine shots in the exchange. No one was struck. Soon after, the man ditched the handgun. Police found that and then located the man a few blocks away. MLive BWC: LVMPD officer dragged from parking lot by vehicle, shoplifting suspect arrested A Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Officer was dragged by a suspect vehicle while responding to a shoplifting incident, video obtained by 8 News Now shows. The Aug. 1 incident began when officers responded to a reported shoplifting at a Target. Body camera footage shows Officer Chadly Dingle beckoning a group of women seen exiting the building. The women had been captured on camera putting clothing in their bags and leaving without paying for it, according to the report. As Dingle worked to take one of the women into custody, she struggled and was able to reach her vehicle. She got into the driver’s seat and began to drive away while the officer, still trying to take her into custody, was partly inside her vehicle. Bystander video shows the woman’s car gaining speed as she attempted to leave the parking lot, while the officer’s legs dangled from one of the rear doors. Video from an Aramark delivery van shows another police cruiser colliding with the suspect vehicle to stop it as the suspect attempted to turn onto a main road. PoliceOne Public Safety News Man dead after multi-vehicle crash in Hollywood A man is dead after a multi-vehicle crash in Hollywood early on Friday morning. The Los Angeles Fire Department said first responders received calls of the crash around 2:42 a.m. near the 7100 block of Sunset Boulevard. When officers from the Los Angeles Police Department arrived, they found three vehicles that had been damaged during the crash. A man was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. A stretch of the northbound direction of Sunset Boulevard is closed near Formosa Avenue as authorities work to clear the roadway. It is unclear what led up to the crash. The LAPD is continuing to investigate the incident. CBS 2 Belligerent man found in tree during Los Angeles house fire A “belligerent” man was found up a tree by emergency crews responding to a house fire in the Elysian Valley neighborhood of Los Angeles early Friday morning, police said. Heavy fire was reported at a single-family home in the 2300 block of Fernleaf Street around 2:15 a.m., according to a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department. Two patients with unknown injuries were assessed by personnel at the scene, the spokesperson said. It took more than three dozen firefighters just under half an hour to extinguish the blaze. During the firefight, Los Angeles police officers at the scene also spotted a man who had climbed a nearby tree. It was unclear why the man climbed the tree, but he was rescued by police and fire department personnel, an LAPD spokesperson confirmed. The unidentified man, who was described as belligerent by the spokesperson, was transported for evaluation but had not been arrested. KTLA 5 New LAFD chief supports independent investigation into Lachman Fire Los Angeles Fire Department Deputy Chief Jaime Moore said he's all in on fully investigating how the fire department handled the Lachman Fire, which smoldered and turned into the Palisades Fire. On Wednesday afternoon, Moore got one step closer to becoming the next chief of the department after Mayor Karen Bass announced him as her pick to fill the role. As he spoke in front of the Council's Public Safety Commission, Moore said he wants to work together to move the department forward, and he said that means being accountable. Just a few weeks ago, Bass called for an investigation into how LAFD firefighters responded to the Lachman Fire in January. 7 on Your Side Investigates has spoken to several former LAFD and wildfire investigators, who have said that burn scar should have been closely watched leading into the Santa Ana winds. The Los Angeles Times reports firefighters who responded to the Lachman Fire warned there were still hot spots, but were ordered to move on. "Our members were not listened to and were not heard," Moore said in front of the committee. "That is why I am supporting Mayor Bass's request for an independent investigation into the Lachman Fire, because I want to get to the bottom of it." ABC 7 Southern California officials issue evacuation warnings ahead of heavy rainstorm that could cause flooding Local officials across Southern California are preparing for a "large storm system" that will bring heavy rainfall and potential flooding to burn scars by Thursday night. In preparation, officials have issued evacuation warnings, road closures and ordered thousands of feet of K Rails to be set up to help minimize the potential damage from the widespread rain. The National Weather Service said the low-pressure system will generate periods of "moderate to heavy rain this evening through Saturday, and possibly into early next week." Rainfall totals are expected to be between 1-3 inches in most metropolitan areas and between 2-5 inches in mountain and foothill communities. Although there is uncertainty about exactly when the rain will begin, weather officials said it will arrive sometime in the evening hours on Thursday and continue well into the early morning on Friday. The storm will not only bring wet weather but will also bring colder conditions. The NWS said maximum temperatures will mostly be in the 60s throughout the coasts and valleys.
