Hi Friends,
I voted against ending the shutdown.
Since the start of my career, I’ve fought to ensure that everyone has access to quality, affordable health care. I believe it’s a basic human right and that in the richest country in the history of the world, we should guarantee it.
President Trump and Republicans refused to come to the table to negotiate with Democrats to extend the ACA tax credits that expired on November 1. That means that tens of thousands of Vermonters and millions of Americans will be forced to pay double their current cost for health care, choose a plan that covers less, or go without health care altogether.
Let me be clear, shutdowns are bad for our country. They hurt people just trying to get by. Congress needs to work together better to avoid shutdowns.
But I can’t support a deal that doesn’t avoid forcing those terrible choices on so many trying to make ends meet.
People are already being hammered with higher prices caused by President Trump’s tariffs. It's beyond cruel that he’s also forcing them to pay more for their health care.
I won’t stop fighting to lower the cost of health care for everyone.
Thanks,
Peter
