After Democrats finally started to grow a spine, standing up against the astoundingly cruel Trump-GOP budget bill and holding firm for 41 days in the longest government shutdown in American history, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer let his coalition cave in to Trump with almost nothing to show for it.
There is no extension of ACA Obamacare subsidies -- only the ludicrous promise of another GOP “vote” on them, which will do nothing to allay the anticipated doubling of health care premium costs for millions of working families, starting as soon as next year.
And not only did Minority Whip Dick Durbin fail to keep the Democratic coalition together, he was one of the eight defecting Senators who actually voted for the GOP bill himself!
Not one of the eight weak-kneed Democrats who voted for the Republican bill -- which as you may recall is expected to result in the loss of healthcare by 17 million Americans -- is up for election next year, which is a pretty good indication of how leadership thought this would play with potential Democratic voters in 2026.
Democratic party leadership is hopelessly out of touch with the needs of the American people, and incapable of leading our party into a new future. Sign the petition to say, Schumer and Durbin have got to go -- NOW!
Schumer and Durbin should resign their seats immediately, and let the Democratic governors of their states appoint members who will fight for the people! And Senate Democrats should elect a leadership team with the backbone to fight everywhere for affordability.
Democrats across the country just swept the November elections with a tough affordability message, including the New York mayoral and two gubernatorial races, and the California redistricting proposal to offset Trump’s mid-decade election-rigging. If there’s one take-away from these wins, it’s that leadership must stay tough and stand for something!
But less than a week out from the Democrats’ first big wins of the second Trump era, the tone-deaf Schumer and Durbin just let out all the steam. Instead of letting the Republicans own their shutdown, with their anti-family, pro-billionaire, all-marble Lincoln bathroom priorities, the Democratic leaders just let them off the hook.
Schumer and Durbin look like losers. Tell the Democratic party: We need a clean break. We need leaders who understand the stakes and can take us to victory in 2026.
