Hi Reader,
Sometimes, the impact of a story is clear the moment it’s published.
Earlier this year, The Hechinger Report revealed that New Jersey ranks last in the nation for inclusion, the measure of how often students with disabilities learn alongside their peers. Our reporting showed that for young students, in particular, the state’s inclusion rates are especially low.
Three months later, the NJ State Special Education Advisory Council announced that, this year, it would study how the state can better support inclusion for students in the early grades.
Stories like this matter because they show the real-world consequences behind the numbers. They reveal where public policy falls short and how communities and educators are working to close those gaps.
But this kind of reporting takes time and persistence. Our reporters talk with families, experts and educators for months to understand not just what’s happening, but why.
If you believe that every child deserves a fair start — and that the public deserves the full story — we ask you to support this work today. During our end-of-year NewsMatch campaign, every dollar you give will be matched, doubling your impact for independent education reporting.
