After 43 days of pain inflicted upon the American people, the Democrat government shutdown was officially terminated late Wednesday night thanks to the leadership of Republicans in Washington. This did not have to happen. It did not have to be this way. Our work in service to the American people did not have to be interrupted for even a second, but alas, Democrats chose bluster and showboating over governance.
SNAP benefits did not have to lapse unnecessarily. Servicemembers, Capitol Police, air traffic controllers, and countless others did not have to miss their paychecks. Airports around the nation did not have to scale back their operating statuses and leave millions of travelers in a lurch. The list goes on and on. So what did the Democrats want? They wanted the American people to once again clean up a mess that they created – as you’ll read in the next section of this newsletter.
On Wednesday, before House Republicans led passage of the Continuing Resolution (CR), I took to the floor of the House to call out Democrats for the havoc that they have inflicted upon the entire nation. You don’t want to miss this. In my remarks, I asked three simple questions:
Did we hear anything from Democrats about THE MILLIONS OF AMERICANS who got walloped by them when they shut the government down?
Did we hear an apology from Democrats to the American people for deliberately misleading them for over 40 days?
Did we hear an admission that the only reason Democrats shut down the government is to cover up for a catastrophic policy failure that they concocted and set an end date on?
Sadly, but not surprisingly, the answer was a big, fat NO on all three. Now that Republicans have ended the Democrat government shutdown, we’re continuing to push full steam ahead on the America First agenda. I’m very proud to have helped advance the CR from the Rules Committee to the House floor, and to have voted in favor of the CR for the second time in a row.
An Interesting Read
In late October, David Winston, a former staff member for Speaker Newt Gingrich, penned an insightful article that gives important context as to the health care policy failures of Democrats. In his piece, he lays out a timeline that details how the temporary COVID credits – that I described to you in previous newsletters – amounted to nothing more than an expansion of an expensive government-run program that would crush the American taxpayer. Here is a short excerpt:
Schumer and his fellow Democrats had an opportunity to make these enhanced subsidies permanent with passage of the Inflation Reduction Act three years ago but chose not to. After using the legislative process to minimize the impact of Republican votes dealing with the Affordable Care Act, the American Rescue Plan and the Inflation Reduction Act, they now expect Republicans to do their job for them, make the subsidies permanent, and are willing to keep the government shut down indefinitely, regardless of the economic and national security impacts ahead.

A Piece of American History
On January 17, 1781, General Daniel Morgan led over 1,000 American soldiers to victory over the British at the Battle of Cowpens in South Carolina. Having suffered close to 1,000 casualties because of the battle, British forces were severely diminished. This loss severely inhibited the ability of the British to amass forces to overtake other colonies in the south. Following the battle, British General Cornwallis abandoned his quest to seize South Carolina as a British stronghold.
