John, November marks Native American Heritage Month.
As a Chicana woman with indigenous roots, it’s important for me to uplift the beauty of Indigenous cultures across the world but particularly in the United States with its history of violent and colonial rule.
The Native American people were systemically killed, forcibly assimilated to white colonial systems, and still continue to face disenfranchisement and disproportionate health issues, violence, and lack of resources on reservations.
Native American Heritage Month is an invitation to join Native and Indigenous folks in stepping towards liberation everywhere. The movement for land back, the movement for a free Palestine, for Black liberation, and for Latino rights are all interconnected.
The future that we’re fighting for is built on that same belief: that our liberation and collective freedom is bound together. When we fight for housing, for healthcare, and for representation rooted in equity and respect, we’re honoring those who have always led the way in imagining a more just world.
We will continue to lift up Indigenous and Native voices, celebrate community resilience, and recommit to a future grounded in care, truth, and collective freedom.
