The U.S. Bureau of Land Management is planning to allow destructive oil drilling in about 16 million acres of the Western Arctic Reserve in Alaska. This wild, ecologically rich region is home to spectacular Arctic wildlife like polar bears, caribou, and yellow-billed loons, and it’s a haven for millions of migratory birds.
Under the agency’s plan, fossil fuel companies would be able to industrialize the reserve, carving it up with drilling pads, roads, and pipelines that would scar fragile tundra landscapes, pollute precious air and water, and release massive amounts of carbon emissions into the atmosphere.
This irreplaceable ecosystem shouldn’t be gutted for oil and gas development.
Now more than ever, the United States needs bold action to break away from fossil fuels. New drilling in the reserve will only dig us deeper into climate chaos while accelerating the loss of Arctic species and sea ice.
