Tomorrow is National Philanthropy Day—a day dedicated to reflecting on the impact of charitable giving and the spirit of generosity that drives it. For Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), this day holds special meaning because our work would not be possible without the vital support we receive from supporters around the world.

With Giving Tuesday and the end of the year around the corner, we’re sharing a few strategic ways you can make a gift to MSF before December 31—helping to fuel our work while maximizing your impact.

Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) If you are 70 ½ or older with a traditional individual retirement account (IRA), a QCD can maximize your charitable impact, lower your tax burden, and satisfy your required minimum distribution (RMD), the amount that you must withdraw annually from your IRA once you’re 73. We recommend starting your QCD now to allow enough time for your financial institution to process your request before year-end.

Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) You can easily make a one-time or recurring grant from your DAF, ensuring your charitable dollars are put into action to fuel MSF teams worldwide. Processing times can vary, but many charitable sponsors suggest initiating your DAF grant no later than December 3 in order to be processed by the end of the year.

Appreciated Securities You can easily donate appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual funds. Not only is the total value of the stock upon transfer tax-deductible, but there is also no obligation to pay any capital gains taxes on the appreciation. Gifts of securities must be received on or before December 31 to be processed before the end of year.

Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA) If you are 65 or older, your CGA gift of $10,000 or more provides an immediate income tax deduction and earns you a fixed amount every year for the rest of your life. We recommend reaching out to us now to discuss a CGA if you'd like it processed before the end of the year.

Workplace giving and matching gifts Many employers sponsor matching gift programs as part of their philanthropic initiatives to reward their employees for making charitable donations. Oftentimes, when an employee donates to a non-profit organization, their employer will also donate to that organization, dollar-for-dollar. Explore my options.

Donating these types of non-cash assets may have an even greater impact when initiated before the end of 2025, due to changes that Congress’s recently passed tax bill will introduce. To ensure your gift is received and processed before December 31, we encourage you to start making plans with your financial institutions today and let us know in advance so we can anticipate your gift and thank you.
