Our communities are under attack. The ACLU is protecting them in court.

ACLU Supporter, our legal team has been working hard this week to keep the Trump administration in check – fighting to protect immigrants against extreme abuse and to keep troops off our streets. Here's the latest:

* We're suing ICE – again – for detaining people in inhumane living conditions.

This time, we're taking them to court over conditions at California's largest immigrant detention center. People are being kept in isolation, denied basic necessities like adequate food or clean water, and facing severe abuse from staff members, including getting pepper-sprayed and receiving sexually abusive pat-downs.

The people we're representing are being denied basic medical care – one of our clients likely has cancer but has gone months without seeing a specialist or getting any treatment, while another has received such substandard care for his diabetes that he now has an open ulcer. Meanwhile, access to lawyers is extremely limited.

This is just another example of ICE's utter disregard for the rights and dignity of the people in its custody. Everyone is entitled to food, medical care, and legal counsel – and we'll keep fighting to hold these facilities accountable.

* We're supporting the state of Illinois' lawsuit against the Trump administration.

Earlier this week, we filed an amicus brief in the Supreme Court with the ACLU of Illinois and other free speech groups, urging the Court to maintain a lower court's block on President Trump's federalization and deployment of National Guard troops into Chicago.

Just like in Washington D.C. and Los Angeles, these deployments are a clear attempt to intimidate our communities and stifle our First Amendment rights. But we all have a right to criticize our government, and the military should never be used to chill our freedom to protest peacefully.

While the year may be winding down, we're just getting started. The ACLU stays ready to protect our rights at every turn – and we're glad to have you with us.

Together,

The ACLU Team
