A note from from Mayor Brian Turnbull...
** NORTHVILLIANS,
------------------------------------------------------------
I hope you’re enjoying summer… it’s a steamy one so far, rain & water have been scarce. And on the subject of clean water, there is an educational protest on Enbridge Line 5 this Friday, 7/17, 4:30-6:30 @ Northville’s Ford Field central park area hosted by the Michigan Youth Activism Society on freshwater implications. I am acutely aware of the ramifications this 67-year-old pipeline (which crosses the Mackinaw Straights) has as a threat to the Great Lakes through its 184-year-old treaty rights. It risks not only the beauty of historic Mackinaw Island & the Straights, but potentially endangers the largest freshwater reservoir in the entire world known as the Great Lakes, from which we in Northville get our water via the Detroit River.
In Northern Michigan, this is the number one issue that could threaten their livelihood of tourism ... but more importantly, it is up to each of us to educate society that Line 5 poses a real threat to wild life, potentially endangers the marine ecosystem and quite frankly, could jeopardize our own survival without fresh clean water.
I have spoken on this topic at various meetings at the federal, state and local level. I respectfully ask that all of us do everything we can to be educated, and then to educate others on this issue:
* It’s up to each of us to consider the implications of the 1953 easement in the Mackinaw Straights.
* And as most people know, more than 90% of this oil is used outside Michigan
* Line 5 potentially threatens the drinking water supply for not only us in Northville, but could for 5 Million Michiganders along with others in the Region.
* The Mackinac Straights has been called out as the worst possible place for a Great
Lakes oil spill, which could potentially pollute up to 720 miles of shoreline with only 30% of the oil being recoverable.
It’s directly up to us to protect the greatest natural resource we have in Michigan... that being our reserve of freshwater.
