Building a greener, fairer Oldham
We were proud to welcome Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham to the Northern Roots site this week - joined by Council Leader Arooj Shah, Deputy Leader Abdul Jabbar, and Elaine Taylor, Cabinet Member for Housing and Regeneration.
Together, they saw first-hand the huge progress being made on one of the most exciting regeneration projects in the region - transforming 160 acres of underused land into the UK’s largest urban farm and eco-park.
From new green skills and training opportunities to the upcoming Visitor Centre and Forestry Skills Hub, Northern Roots is shaping a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable future for Oldham, driven by community, ambition and partnership.

Oldham hosts Living Wage Week celebration
We were proud to host the Living Wage event at Oldham Library, celebrating more than 800 Living Wage employers who are setting the standard for fair pay and decent work.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Arooj Shah, was joined by the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, Ian MacArthur, Director at the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter and San Johal, FCIPD, Chief People Officer at Calisen.
It was great to hear the Mayor of Greater Manchester speak so positively about our town and the fantastic work that’s been achieved so far, working for a decade of real change and good growth by accelerating efforts and partnerships, and making sure we’re easing the pressure on residents.
Measures include keeping the £2 bus fare, allowing older and disabled people to travel for free before 9.30am, helping residents out of debt, and reaffirming the commitment that no one in Greater Manchester should be paid below the Real Living Wage.
Oldham Council became an accredited Living Wage Employer in 2019 with real and lasting impact. Each year, over 1,600 workers in Oldham receive a pay rise because of our commitment to the Real Living Wage.

Youth travel ambassadors encourage greener school travel
We love seeing young people making a positive difference in our community.
At Saddleworth School, their Youth Travel Ambassadors have been busy distributing leaflets to promote the Park and Stride scheme.
The initiative encourages families to walk part of the journey to school. Not only does this help students build healthy daily activity into their routines, but it also reduces traffic congestion around the school entrance making the area safer and more pleasant for everyone.
