G’day John,
********************

Still writing to you from couch – I am going under the knife in
a week or so – I will you all posted!

On Thursday I had the honour of receiving an integrity award The
Accountability Round Table.

In 2010, Accountability Round Table created two Parliamentary
Integrity Awards for federal parliamentarians. They honour two
former members of the federal Parliament, John Button and Alan
Missen, in recognition of their outstanding commitment to the
values, purposes and duties for which power was entrusted to them
as members of the Australian Parliament.

Not many people know about this award but it is important.

I was very chuffed! Especially as the other awards winners were
David Pocock, Monique Ryan and Catherine Holmes, Royal
commissioner of the Robodebt Inquiry.

After the shocker of robodebt and the shockingly slow government
response, Ms Holmes forensic examination of witnesses and her
determination to get to the bottom of what went so wrong, was
just what Australians needed.

I am a particular fan of Ms Holmes' call for politicians to lead
on changing our social attitudes to people receiving welfare
payments. I’ve been one of those people and I can tell you that
most people would rather have work, and a small number of people
just can’t work.

But, boy oh boy is there a lot of work to do in the transparency
and integrity space!

You know we have a problem when the people directly responsible
for robodebt still haven’t faced any really serious consequences.

And this Government has a bill to water down our freedom of
information laws.

and we still don’t have a Whistle blower protection Authority –
and our whistle blowers are David’s standing up against
Goliaths. They end up losing their job, their livelihood, often
their careers and in some cases their liberty.

And don’t get me started on the NACC!! So many people (including
me) fought for years for a national corruption commission – And
it has to date been a massive disappointment – we need to fix
that quickly!

Australians like everyone else in the world gets a massive stream
of disinformation about government and institutions, the only way
to fight this – is to be more transparent.

Australians know our governments make mistakes – and can be dodgy
but they’re not the enemy.

But, if we want good government
if want Australians to feel secure –
if we want to take them with us when we are putting up reform –
then they have to trust us!!

That means letting the sunshine in – it’s the only way.
