In the Alpha village in the Kunene Region of Namibia, 21-year-old Elly sat outside her family home and wrapped her newborn in a onesie.

“I should have been in Grade 11 this year,” Elly shared with UNFPA. “That’s all I want, to go back and finish school.”

For girls like Elly who lack access to transportation, basic sexual and reproductive healthcare is out of reach. This creates a heartbreaking crisis of reproductive agency.

Without quality information and services, girls cannot exercise true agency over their futures. UNFPA is working to address this education gap and strengthen the capacity of healthcare workers to help empower girls like Elly in Namibia and beyond. Please, make a donation to fuel this transformative work today. [[link removed]?]

Elly, 21, sits outside her family home with her baby and daughter in the Kunene Region, Namibia.

Elly became pregnant for the first time at just 15 years old. Tragically, she suffered a miscarriage and lost the baby, an experience that had a lifelong impact on her.

At 18, she became pregnant for the second time and gave birth to a healthy daughter. With the support of her parents, she managed to go back to school, returning home during her breaks to breastfeed.

“I wanted to get contraceptives after my second pregnancy,” she said, “ but if you don’t have money for a taxi, you just stay at home."

The Kunene Region has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in Namibia, with more than one in three girls becoming pregnant before they reach adulthood. Girls who become pregnant as teens are more likely to drop out of school, to face ill health, and to grapple with economic hardship throughout their lives.

At UNFPA, we are committed to helping every girl reach her fullest potential. Our teams are on the ground in Namibia, working to deliver integrated, youth-friendly services and reversible contraceptive options to girls through clinics and mobile outreach.

Teenage girls are on the frontlines of this crisis, bearing the social and financial brunt of unintended pregnancy. They shouldn’t have to do it alone. Will you donate to deliver reproductive care in the form of education and healthcare? [[link removed]?]
