Last night, Congress voted to reopen the government after a 40-plus-day shutdown, the longest shutdown in U.S. history.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again:
This deal is a joke that sells out working people and their health care.
Health insurance premiums are still expected to double, even triple, for millions of Americans, many of whom are already struggling to get by. We’re already in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis, and these skyrocketing health care costs will make it so much worse.
On the campaign trail, I’ve heard from dozens of Texans about their own experiences.
A couple of weeks ago, I met Jason, a small-business owner in San Antonio. He shared how hard it’s been for his family to keep up with their medical bills and make sure his daughter, who has epilepsy, gets the care she needs.

Unfortunately, Jason’s story is becoming far too common – and it hits home for me.
My mom had breast cancer.
I’ll never forget the day she was diagnosed. Nothing could’ve prepared me to watch her go through a double mastectomy and treatment that left her frail and exhausted. It turned our world upside down – physically, emotionally, and financially.
For us, Medicare made all the difference.
Without Medicare, my mom couldn’t have afforded the treatment that saved her life.
Without Medicare, I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy many more years with her – more birthdays, more conversations, and more memories.
So when career politicians in D.C. choose to rip away health care from millions of people to fund a massive tax break for billionaires, I take that personally.
When Republicans would rather shut down the government for 40 days rather than make health care more affordable for working families, I get upset.
In the wealthiest country in the world, nobody should ever have to choose between lifesaving care and bankruptcy. It doesn’t have to be like this.
My experience with my mom shaped me, and stories like Jason’s inspire me to keep fighting. I’ve always stood up to protect Medicare, defend coverage for pre-existing conditions, and take on the drug companies that put profits over people – and I’m not stopping any time soon.
I’m running for Senate to fight for a future that when illness strikes, you get the care you need to survive – and you don’t drown in a stack of bills you can’t afford.
If you agree that we can do better, please chip in a donation to our grassroots campaign here in Texas. Together, we can win this race and flip Texas blue. [ [link removed] ]
