This Transgender Awareness Week, November 13-19, join us in celebrating the voices and experiences of transgender and nonbinary people. At AFSP, we know there is no one-size-fits-all approach to mental health care and suicide prevention. That's why we want to raise awareness about important advocacy efforts, education programs, and research regarding mental health and suicide prevention among trans and nonbinary people:
- Educate yourself and others on policies that affect transgender people by visiting our ["LGBTQ+ Individuals & Populations" page]([link removed])
- Learn how you can help prevent suicide among LGBTQ+ people by participating in AFSP's education program [Talk Saves Lives: An Introduction to Suicide Prevention in the LGBTQ+ Community]([link removed]). You can find Talk Saves Lives events through your local chapter by visiting our [Program Calendar]([link removed]).
- Learn more about AFSP-funded LGBTQ+ research studies by leading scientific researchers like [Dr. Russell Toomey]([link removed]), whose findings you can read about in his blog article ["Thriving With Pride: Three Ways to Support LGBTQ+ Youth and Protect Against Suicidal Behavior,"]([link removed]) and [Dr. Karen Bluth]([link removed]), whose study is highlighted in our [Research Roundup]([link removed])
This week, and year-round, we encourage you to explore the above resources and share them with the people in your life. Because transgender and nonbinary people deserve to feel safe, loved, respected, and affirmed –– today and every day.
