John,
When I announced my run for Congress in New York’s 17th Congressional District, a lot of people told me I didn’t have a chance. After all, I don’t come from money or a political family. I grew up in poverty, raised by my mother and grandparents. Some of the names in the race were better known.
But I couldn’t wait for someone to give me permission to run . For too long, political gatekeepers – more concerned with preserving their own power than making the changes Americans so desperately need – created obstacles to keep LGBTQ people like me from running.
Victory Fund saw my potential early and became my first national endorsement, adding legitimacy to my run. Thanks to Victory Fund (and my amazing team!), I’m on track to be one of the first openly LGBTQ, Black Congressmembers ever. Victory Fund is THE organization that does the work to help LGBTQ candidates win. It organized grassroots donors who ensured my campaign could hit the phones and mobilize voters and volunteers.
But to keep these essential candidate services going, Victory Fund needs a lot more support. Will you donate today and help Victory Fund support more LGBTQ candidates? [[link removed]]
Right now, we need a lot of change. Keeping the status quo and status quo politicians just won’t work anymore. As we face a financial crisis, a pandemic, and a Commander-in-Chief who can’t be bothered to lead, we need the record number of LGBTQ people running for office to win on Election Day. Donate now to help Victory Fund’s LGBTQ candidates win! [[link removed]]
When I was growing up, I didn’t see people like me in politics. But Victory Fund is working to change that. To bring diverse, LGBTQ candidates to the table and give them the tools and visibility to win. We must keep going. Will you support Victory Fund’s work for candidates like me with a generous donation? [[link removed]]
If I had listened to the gatekeepers, I never would have run for Congress. Instead, I’m going to make LGBTQ history in November. Together, we can bring the change we need.
Thank you for your support – and for standing with Victory Fund. Let’s keep winning.

LGBTQ Victory Fund has helped thousands of openly LGBTQ candidates win elections up and down the ballot, from sea to shining sea since our founding in 1991. We believe representation is power so we elected U.S. Senators Tammy Baldwin and Kyrsten Sinema, Governors Jared Polis and Kate Brown, all seven LGBTQ members of U.S. Congress and countless candidates for state and local government, including Virginia Delegate Danica Roem, Colorado state Representative Leslie Herod and Pennsylvania Assemblymember Brian Sims. And with an unprecedented number of LGBTQ people running for office in this year, we’ll need your support to make 2020 the next Rainbow Wave.
