Most Americans remember the Rev Jesse Jackson as a civil rights icon, a preacher who exhorted us to “keep hope alive,” and the voice on Sesame Street who taught us to say, “I am somebody” when we were kids.
In her new book, A Dream Deferred: Jesse Jackson and the Fight for Black Political Power [ [link removed] ], Abby Phillip has told the story of Jackson’s political legacy - how he challenged the Democratic Party and pushed forward the dream of a multi-ethnic democracy where everyone can thrive by exercising Black political power.
