Will you stand with churches against government overreach?

Dear John,

You’ve probably seen the ads.

“Las Vegas. Now Open!” “Vegas is back.”

In Nevada, casinos are open for business. Slot machine handles are being pulled. Poker chips are being passed. Barstools are filled.

But churches face criminal and civil penalties if they dare open their doors to more than 50 believers.

Somehow, Nevada has decided this is the best way to reopen the state after closures due to COVID-19. But the unconstitutional double standard is glaringly obvious, John.

There is a big difference between protecting public health and abusing state power to punish people of faith. And right now, government officials in Nevada and elsewhere are failing the test.

With the help of Alliance Defending Freedom, one Nevada church is taking a stand to correct this blatant government overreach.

And they’re not alone.

The demand for legal support for churches is higher than it’s ever been! Your gift today will help protect churches from becoming victims of government overreach.

Your freedoms are fragile and must be defended

In America, the government can’t treat churches and people of faith as second-class citizens. The First Amendment makes that clear.

In these challenging times, churches should be free to focus on shepherding their congregations, helping their communities, and serving those in need. Just as they always do.

But some government officials continue to discriminate against churches and threaten the free exercise of religion.

This must stop.

Religious freedom is the foundation upon which America was built. It is our God-given right. And it must be defended.

As President Ronald Reagan once said, “[Freedom] must be fought for and defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. Those who have known freedom and then lost it have never known it again.”

John, it only takes a quick glance at the news to see how fragile these freedoms are. And how desperately we need to fight for them when they’re threatened—especially by our own government.

That’s why I’m writing to you today.

Attorneys with the ADF Church Alliance are working overtime to ensure that churches across the country get the legal help they need to push back when government officials work to restrict your religious liberty.

But this work is only possible with God’s blessing (John 15:5) and your faithful prayers and financial support.

Please act now to protect churches from government overreach during these challenging times.

It’s not just their freedom on the line—it’s yours too.

What affects the church, affects you and your family

For years, activists have used “separation of church and state” as a misguided battle cry to disqualify people of faith and religious organizations from generally available programs, erase historical religious landmarks, and even block faithful Christians from public service.

Meanwhile, REAL constitutional violations are increasing.

Even before COVID-19, we were seeing incidents where the government was trying to control what churches teach, where they worship, or how they exercise their religious freedom. That is government abuse of power—and it’s unconstitutional.

The more the government reaches its hand into the affairs of the church, the more at risk your religious freedom becomes.

Because what affects the church affects you, John.

When government officials allow people to gather in secular settings but not religious ones, like we’re seeing today, it shows not only a disregard for the First Amendment, but also a complete misunderstanding of people of faith and why we gather to worship.

If we want to protect the legacy of religious freedom here in America for our children and grandchildren, we must act now.

Will you stand with churches and help protect religious freedom today? When you do, you’re defending your right as an American to freely live out your faith.

When we stand together, we can win!

Since the restrictions due to COVID-19 began, Alliance Defending Freedom has assisted, or equipped others to assist, thousands of churches and ministries. Pastors are concerned about the rise of government overreach.

But in just a few months, you’ve helped secure 14 legal victories on behalf of churches and religious ministries—helping millions of Christians have greater access to their churches in this challenging time.

The prayers and support of people like you have impacted your brothers and sisters across the entire country—from as far east as Massachusetts, New York, and North Carolina, to the western shores of Oregon and Washington.

Unfortunately, there’s still a lot of work to do.

We continue to see some government officials deny churches equal treatment and threaten religious freedom.

Churches in America face legal challenges that were unimaginable even a year ago. They need an ally who will stand with them against government overreach—they need you, John.

Year after year, we’ve seen God’s blessing when people of faith stand together to defend religious freedom. And we’re trusting God to move in the hearts of people like you right now to help meet the needs of churches nationwide.

While many ADF cases spend years in litigation, these churches need quick and immediate relief. Every day is critical for churches as they work to reach the lost and share the hope of the Gospel during this challenging time.

So please don’t wait.

Your tax-deductible gift defends churches against government overreach. And it helps protect religious freedom today—and for your children and grandchildren.
