Dear John,
While national politics often dominate the headlines, some of the most important work to defend the Boundary Waters is happening at the state level in Minnesota. And right now, the role of the State is more important than ever.
With renewed attacks coming from the Federal Administration, Minnesota must remain a strong, resilient backstop for the Boundary Waters.
Why is the State of Minnesota such an important backstop?
* Every mine proposed in Minnesota, even on federal land, needs a state permit to mine . No exceptions.
* State environmental reviews can be stronger than federal ones. While federal reviews are currently being rushed and weakened, Minnesota can choose to conduct its own, comprehensive environmental review or partner with the federal government on a joint one.
Minnesota isn't just a safety net— it's often the final line of defense between pristine Wilderness and irreversible damage.
How we win at the state level:
During the Minnesota State Legislative Session, which runs from February to May next year, I am on the ground nearly every day in St. Paul—fighting for policies that safeguard the future of the Wilderness and defending against legislation that could weaken protections for clean water and public lands.
The Minnesota Legislature may seem far from where you live, but its decisions have national consequences. If we lose ground here, the ripple effects could harm one of America’s most treasured landscapes and set a dangerous precedent for wild places across the country.
That’s why your support matters so much. Your gift ensures that we have the resources to respond quickly, mobilize advocates, and push for strong protections for the Boundary Waters at every turn.
When we show up in St. Paul, we’re backed by people like you — supporters from across the nation who believe in keeping our waters clean, our communities healthy, and our Wilderness wild.
And right now, your gift goes three times as far. Thanks to a generous matching challenge from the Manitou Fund, all donations are TRIPLED until November 20.
