I voted no on the government shutdown deal — and now, I’d like to take a moment to explain why and where we go from here. I’ve been clear about one thing from the moment I decided to run for office back in 2017: I’m not here to wheel and deal or play political games. I came to Congress to fight for the working people who make our state, and our country, great – and to get things done. That’s why, even though I wanted this government shutdown to end as much as you did, I just couldn’t vote for a deal that doesn’t work for Michigan. Let’s remember how we got here. From the moment they took control of the White House and Congress in January, Donald Trump and his MAGA allies have pushed an agenda that’s focused on cutting taxes for billionaires at the expense of working families. They’re raising health care costs for hundreds of thousands of Michiganders and voted on cuts to Medicaid for so many people in our state. And now, moving forward with a shutdown deal that does not extend Affordable Care Act subsidies will only further increase health care costs for those who are already struggling to get by. It’s a bad deal, plain and simple, and it will have real, devastating impacts here in Michigan and across the country. Without the extension of these tax credits, 31,000 people in my district alone will see the cost of their health care coverage soar, along with so many more people across Michigan and the country. Well, not on my watch. My priorities haven’t changed: achieving lower costs, affordable health care, a strong workforce, and a government that works for Michigan. That’s why I would not budge on this. I couldn’t support any deal that slashes health care and does nothing to cut costs for Michiganders. While I may not have been able to single-handedly stop this bill from passing, I can promise you this:
So, what’s next? I’ll keep working to restore health care access, reverse the Trump administration’s devastating cuts, and ensure health care subsidies are extended. And – this is important – I will keep fighting as hard as I can to win here in Michigan next November and help Democrats flip the Senate blue. That is our best hope of serving as a check on Donald Trump’s power and protecting health care long term. It’s time to hold Republicans accountable for their cruel attacks on our health care. We need more than empty promises that costs are going to go down and things are going to get better. Real change comes when real people take action together. With so much on the line, I can’t thank you enough for being in this fight with me. More soon, Haley Paid for by Haley Stevens for Michigan. |
