John,

A recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO) brings both good news and a stark warning in the global fight against tobacco. Global tobacco use has dropped by 180 million people in the last 25 years, with the biggest declines among women. But this progress is under serious threat from the tobacco industry’s relentless efforts to undermine global health protections.

Tobacco companies are aggressively marketing harmful and addictive products across the world, especially in low- and middle-income countries. They’re constantly introducing new products like e-cigarettes to hook a new generation of kids. And they’re doing everything they can to block or weaken proven policies that save lives.

Next week, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids will join governments from around the world in Geneva, Switzerland, for a critical conference on implementing the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) – the world’s first global public health treaty.

But the tobacco industry is going all-out to derail these efforts . The WHO has warned that the industry is trying to infiltrate country delegations, fund front groups, and distort science to pressure policymakers to abandon strong tobacco control policies.

Why this matters: Tobacco kills more than eight million people every year. It’s the #1 cause of preventable death. We’re advocating for policies – like higher tobacco taxes, smoke-free laws, bold health warnings, and marketing restrictions – that are proven to reduce tobacco use and protect kids from addiction.

What we're doing: The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids is leading global efforts to counter Big Tobacco and accelerate these lifesaving public health measures. We’re:

* Supporting partner organizations and government leaders in dozens of countries.
* Exposing and countering tobacco industry tactics worldwide.
* Providing legal and technical support to countries facing industry pressure.
* Mobilizing advocates and media to hold the industry accountable.

But we can't do this without you.

As we gather in Geneva, we’ll urge world leaders to stand up to Big Tobacco and take bold, decisive action to save lives. We have the tools to win this fight. Countries must put health before profit and fully implement these proven policies.

Thanks for standing with us,

Smita Baruah
