Assistant Attorney General Honored with Ingham County Bar Association’s Theodore W. Swift Civility Award

*LANSING* – The Ingham County Bar Association has recognized Assistant Attorney General John L. Thurber (PNG) [ [link removed] ] with the Theodore W. Swift Civility Award, announced Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. The Theodore W. Swift Civility Award is presented to a member of the Ingham County Bar Association who exemplifies civility in their interactions with the Bench, Bar, clients, and the public, while upholding and advancing the highest principles and traditions of the legal profession.  

“For nearly three decades, John has shown professionalism, civility and an unwavering commitment to the rule of law,” Nessel said. “His work has made a lasting impact on the State of Michigan, and his career embodies the very best of public service. I congratulate him on this well-deserved honor.” 

Thurber received his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Kenyon College in 1990 and earned his law degree from the University of Detroit School of Law in 1993. He became a member of the State Bar of Michigan in November 1993. Thurber has served the Department of Attorney General since March 1996 and is currently an assistant attorney general within the Alcohol & Gambling Enforcement Division. Over his 29-year career with the Department, he has primarily represented the Michigan Department of Corrections in federal court, trying dozens of cases across the state and arguing multiple times before the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
