He simply wanted to buy a gift for his daughter. But a wrong train, a stranger’s promise and a cruel trap led to decades of bonded labor, far from home and family.

In March 2025, everything changed. Freedom broke through for Appa Rao.

Thanks to the tireless work of IJM, in partnership with the local government, and the support of people like you, Appa Rao was rescued. And after 22 years, he was reunited with his daughter, Sayamma.

They hugged for the first time in over two decades.

And now, they drink tea and enjoy meals together again.
