John,
Late Monday, the Senate approved a deal to end the government shutdown.
A group of Senate Democrats gave in without securing any real gains for everyday Americans. They negotiated a deal that only includes a promise on a future vote on the tax credits. This is the same empty promise Republicans made earlier in the shutdown. These Senate Democrats have officially caved.
Now the House intends to vote today to approve the deal, where Speaker Mike Johnson has made no commitment to bring a vote on the ACA tax credits next month. Senate Democrats had the leverage to protect our communities and they gave it away. Although the government could open soon after, it will also take some time for government benefits to be delivered to the public. With President Trump signing the agreement sometime this evening, the shutdown could end tonight with no guarantee on whether our communities will be able to afford health care.
TELL THE HOUSE TO FUND OUR HEALTH CARE AND OTHER BENEFITS
Here’s what is at stake. Close to 1.8 million Black and Hispanic people could lose coverage without the tax credits. Around 56% of Black adults carry with them some type of medical debt.1 Without these credits, health care premiums could double, deepening the crisis in our communities.
There’s no guarantee Congress will approve the life-saving credits necessary for people to afford health care. We need leaders who understand that fighting for people and delivering for them is actually the entire point. We cannot allow Congress to gamble with our health and our futures.
TELL THE HOUSE TO FUND OUR HEALTH CARE AND OTHER BENEFITS
The House has the chance to fix this mistake, but only if we speak up now. Black communities across the country are counting on Congress to do its job, to fight for people, not politics. Let’s make sure they hear us loud and clear.
Tell your Representatives in the House to stand up for policies that actually keep people safe.
Until Justice Is Real,
