Here's what you need to know:




* Anti-abortion lawmakers are reaching beyond their own state borders in attempts to ban abortion everywhere. They've introduced bills to classify abortion pills as controlled substances and to criminalize providers who prescribe or mail medication abortion across state lines.
* Interstate shield laws protect providers from being criminally targeted for offering care to out-of-state patients. They also help keep patient medical data private and safeguard those who assist patients in accessing care.
* By protecting providers, we protect patients—especially those living in abortion-ban states. Telehealth and cross-state prescribing have been lifelines for people with disabilities, low-income women, people living in rural areas, and so many others.
* Shield laws are now on the books in 18 states and the District of Columbia, creating safe harbors preserving access to reproductive health care for thousands.




The bottom line: Anti-abortion extremists think they can impose their will on states where abortion is still legal—but they're wrong. Shield laws defend providers and protect care.
