In May, the Trump administration issued a sham “energy emergency” and ordered a Michigan coal-fired power plant to remain open past its scheduled retirement.

Over four months later, utility reports revealed that this utterly unnecessary mandate had already cost $80 million dollars, which will be paid by ratepayers across 11 Midwestern states.

It’s not just the Midwest. Electricity bills are going up across the country, and Trump and his allies in Congress are making it worse. Even though clean energy continues to be the cheapest and fastest way to meet rising electricity demands, the Trump administration is doing everything it can to bolster the much more expensive and polluting fossil fuel industry, at the expense of anyone who pays an electricity bill.

Here are three ways the Trump administration is propping up polluting industries and how Earthjustice is fighting back.

Clean energy is cheaper than coal, but Trump is canceling clean energy projects. Trump administration has been canceling funding and blocking permits for solar, wind, and transmission work that are needed to bring clean, cheap power to the grid. Earthjustice attorneys show up in Public Utilities Commissions around the country to make the case for clean energy. We also fight back against Trump’s lawlessness in court.

Trump is forcing aging, expensive fossil fuel plants to keep operating past their planned retirements. On his first day in office, Trump issued a series of “emergency” orders to override decisions by power plant owners and state utility regulators to retire uneconomic fossil-fuel power plants. Earthjustice is suing to prevent this abuse of emergency powers.

Trump is using AI as an excuse to push fossil fuels. The Trump administration is using AI and data center energy demands as an excuse to gut environmental protections and force coal-fired power plants to keep running.
