Last week, I returned to ICE’s Eloy Detention Center here in Arizona for my third visit this year.

Weeks into the longest shutdown in American history, ICE has said they are not taking visits from Members of Congress. John, oversight of these taxpayer-funded centers is literally my job — so I went anyway.

The conditions at Eloy are horrific.

Dozens of people who came to this country seeking asylum are being detained. They lack access to quality water and face abuse and racist treatment.

One of my constituents, who goes by Yari, has been detained since February. Yari has leukemia, but ICE refused to allow her to see an oncologist until my office and the public pressured them to do so. Now, ICE is refusing to turn over her medical results, delaying the treatment she urgently needs.

When I went back to Eloy to demand ICE give over her results, I heard excuse after excuse. It’s inhumane, and frankly, it’s bullshit.

These are just some of the horrific stories of neglect and abuse in ICE detention centers in Arizona and across the country.

When human rights violations take place in our own country, it’s incumbent on all of us to stand up and speak out.
