And what would happen if we did?

A personal message from Steven Nekhaila
Chair, Libertarian National Committee

John ,

My previous message described a huge new goal for the Libertarian Party. I said the new LP can and will equalize with the Democrats and Republicans within the next ten years. That means the LP will have...

* The same or more libertarian voters

* The same or more donors and activists

* Equal ballot status

* Equal or greater visibility

* Equal or greater representation in every elected body

I said the next few messages will explain why this is possible and how it can be done. I said we needed to start by forging a new Libertarian Party culture. That culture must...

* Favor outreach and recruitment over infighting.

* Prefer diverse messaging over fussy quality control.

* Compare the benefits our policies offer to the harms caused by the Democrats and Republicans.

* Create a Big Tent party instead of a Small Tent party.

* Provide a home for every kind of libertarian - anyone who lands in the libertarian sector of the Nolan Chart.

* Foster a warm and friendly community for libertarians with differing personal values and aesthetic preferences.

I described three crucial points...

1. Don't import the toxic Left-Right culture war into our community.
2. Use messaging that serves libertarian purists and pragmatists at the same time, while requiring that every proposal moves in the direction of less state aggression.
3. Stop fighting over our small differences until we've enacted our large agreements.

And I left you with a question...

If it were possible to make the Libertarian Party as big and powerful as the Democrats and Republicans, and do it in less than ten years, would you want that?

I can tell you right now that there are already enough people who agree with us on enough things to achieve that goal. All we have to do is...

Learn to take yes for an answer

If someone wants to move in the same direction as you, why would you say, "No, that's not good enough?"

Why would you need to know in advance that they want to travel the whole way before you even start the journey with them?

Well, that's what a lot of us do. We cast condemnations if we don't get full agreement on everything at once. And yet...

Very few of us figured it all out immediately. It took time. We had to go step by step. Being in the company of other libertarians helped. Though it also sometimes hurt. Sometimes, libertarians were rude to us because they felt a need to virtue signal how principled and pure they were. Instead of that, how about this...

Why not say yes, let's travel together as far as we can go?

Let's start the journey and see where it leads. Wouldn't you expect your superior ideas to be seductive and persuasive over time, so that people want to go further and further with you?

This is what I'm proposing to you. It's already the case that millions of people agree with us about more issues than they do the Democrats and Republicans. Why don't we embrace that fact and take advantage of it?

Maybe you don't think it's true. Maybe you don't think there are enough people to make my goal achievable. Well, I'll share evidence to support my claim in the next message. In the meantime, ponder these questions...

* If it were possible to make the Libertarian Party as big and powerful as the Democrats and Republicans, and do it in less than ten years, would you want that?
* Can you take yes for an answer?
* Can you travel with people who want to go in the same direction as you, even if they're not yet ready to go the whole way?
* Do you have enough confidence in your own values to believe that people will move toward you over time, if only you give them the space and encouragement to do so?

In the meantime, as you ponder these questions, please do two things...

First, give the ideas I'm sharing a vote of confidence by [link removed] making a contribution or starting or increasing a new monthly pledge. The recent bout of infighting badly depleted us. We need your help to continue.

Second, make a commitment to do a simple volunteer task. Open every single message we send you, even if you don't have time to read it immediately. This simple act will help prevent Google and Yahoo from delivering our messages into spam and side folders. But, please, also read what we send you. That's how you'll become a part of the change we're going to cause.

Sincerely,

Steven Nekhaila
