** Dear John,
------------------------------------------------------------
As America approaches its 250th birthday, re-reading John Lewis reminds us of our power as citizens to shape our democracy. “In spite of the fears or the misgiving or the reservations you may have,” the great civil rights leader once said, remembering the first steps toward Selma’s Edmund Pettus Bridge, “you keep your eyes on the prize, and keep moving toward the goal.”
Our moment, however challenging, does not require us to channel John Lewis’ astounding courage. We must simply keep our eyes on the prize and keep moving forward.
The state of our union is a call to do just that – to work toward a nation where “We the People” includes all of us equally, and a government whose authority comes from the citizens it seeks to govern. The FairVote team and I have never felt more fortunate, energized, or hopeful to advance the election reforms that will make government work for the American people.

With your support, we have partnered with dozens of city and state leaders nationwide – helping to rebuild democracy from the ground up, and providing voters with more choice and greater say in our shared republic.
There’s more work to be done. Yet what a thrill to see over a million New Yorkers use ranked choice voting to select candidates for mayor and City Council – in campaigns where candidates cross-endorsed each other, and reached out to voters in every neighborhood. In total, 18 cities used RCV in 2025. Next year, our nation’s capital of Washington, D.C. will join them and show the nation what our elections can be.
Out west, Portland, Oregon’s City Council – elected with proportional RCV for the very first time – opened representation to communities that had never before elected one of their own. In Alaska, a state legislature elected with RCV united across party lines to save a popular package of expanded education spending from a governor’s veto.
Together, we continue to make real and lasting progress. Sometimes we have to play defense. That’s why we have built cross-partisan support for RCV that has successfully held off federal threats to reform. We’ve also provided legal support to our voting rights and civil rights partners, along with the communication, research, and strategic tools that help state and local groups win.
FairVote has never been stronger. We are poised for a powerful 2026. We intend to grow this movement by making smart investments in the state and local advocates organizing to pass and sustain reform where it matters most.
It is an honor to do this work alongside fellow Americans – and with you. Your continued support will allow us to meet this moment. As John Lewis understood, we move forward one step at a time, knowing that the obstacles ahead can be met with dedication and determination.
Please join us in this critical moment with a generous donation for a democracy that ensures representation and a genuine voice for us all.
Onward with gratitude,
Meredith Sumpter
