John
After a month and a half of the Schumer Shutdown—the longest government shutdown ever—the government is finally almost open. I joined many in prayer daily for this outcome. God always provides.
The shutdown was a long, Democrat protest against President Trump. We are all aware Democrat Senators do not like President Trump, but unfortunately they took out their anger on federal workers, SNAP recipients, and children in the Head Start program. That was unjustified and painful for millions of families.
On Monday night, the Senate passed several full-year spending bills for agriculture, military construction, veterans, and Capitol operations. We also passed short-term funding until January 30, 2026, for the rest of government operations.
So now what happens?
A bill to reopen the government passed the Senate, so it now moves to the House for a vote. We expect they will pass the bill right away, and the government will reopen within a couple days.
Republicans remained united and did not cave to the Democrats’ demands for $1.5 trillion in climate change and new Obamacare subsidies. Their main target was increasing the premium subsidies to insurance companies for 19 million people on the heath exchange marketplace. It did nothing for the other 320 million Americans’ health care premiums, and it only papered over the real issues in Obamacare.
Obamacare was supposed to lower everyone’s health care costs, but it has instead caused everyone’s rates to skyrocket. In Oklahoma, Obamacare rates have climbed 200% in six years while commercial insurance increased 29%. We have to do something about the affordability of health care for everyone, not just the select few in the Obamacare marketplace.
We can do it.
Now that Republicans made sure SNAP recipients, Air Traffic Controllers, federal law enforcement, and other federal workers are no longer political "leverage" for the Democrats, we can get back to making America great again.
Senate Republicans already cleared the remainder of President Trump's backlog of Executive and Judicial Branch nominees. We have started negotiating the Defense Bill, which we need to get done by the end of the year. We also have a housing affordability bill, a highway transportation bill, and my bill lowering the cost of prescription drugs.
It is time to get our government back to work serving the nation.
In God We Trust,
James Lankford
