We're honored to announce today that Evidence Action has been selected from among 4,000+ organizations as an awardee of Action for Women's Health, a $250 million global initiative advancing women's health worldwide.
For decades, Melinda French Gates has championed women's power and opportunity, starting with their health. Through Pivotal, the impact organizations she founded, she continues that work with Action for Women's Health. The initiative targets what's been most neglected and under-resourced in women's health.
The award validates our proven, scalable approach to eliminating congenital syphilis ([link removed]) – one of the most overlooked yet entirely preventable threats to pregnant women and newborns.
The problem: Congenital syphilis causes 390,000+ severe adverse outcomes annually, including 150,000 stillbirths and 70,000 neonatal deaths. Rates are worsening — babies today are 11% more likely to be exposed than eight years ago.
The solution: A dual HIV/syphilis test costs just $0.15 more than the HIV-only tests already used in many countries. A single penicillin shot under $0.20 prevents over 80% of adverse outcomes.
We work with governments to integrate syphilis screening and treatment into existing prenatal care systems. What we’ve already achieved:
* 🇱🇷 Liberia: 8% → 88% screening coverage in 4 years; 1,000 lives saved
* 🇿🇲 Zambia: 90% screening at trained facilities; 75% national coverage
* 🇨🇲 Cameroon: 16,000+ healthcare workers trained across 1,600+ facilities
Pivotal's backing creates momentum as we expand to new countries and catalyze a broader coalition to eliminate congenital syphilis where the burden is greatest.
