As the leaves have changed, the clocks moved forward and we have settled into another beautiful Iowa autumn, my office continues working to help Iowans grow and protect their futures. Whether it’s saving for education, investing in your community or making sure unclaimed funds find their way home, fall is a perfect time to take stock and plan ahead. This season, we’re highlighting big news from IAble®, exciting investment opportunities through Invest in Iowa and ways to make education savings simpler with our ISave 529™ Winter Giveaway.
Roby Smith Iowa State Treasurer
It has been a busy few months, with people investing in IAble and ISave 529 daily, and returning funds through Great Iowa Treasure Hunt. Since June 1, 2025, we have seen:
- $3+ million invested into IAble accounts.
- $109+ million invested into ISave 529 accounts.
- $11+ million returned through Great Iowa Treasure Hunt.
My office is always committed to providing these transformative services across the state and beyond. To learn more, visit our website.
IAble, Iowa’s Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) plan, is a savings program designed to help people with disabilities save beyond asset caps without risking their eligibility for federally means-tested programs like Social Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid.
To be currently eligible for an IAble account, a person’s disability must be present before age 26, but starting January 1, the age of the disability onset will increase to 46 years old. This increase means six million more people across the United States and more than 130,000 right here in Iowa will become eligible for this important program. If you or a loved is or will become eligible for an IAble account visit IAble.gov!
Saving for the future should be accessible and IAble is here to help! To learn about IAble, visit IAble.gov, and register for reminders about this upcoming change!
Gifting made easy
The holidays are just around the corner, and for individuals on SSI and Medicaid, knowing what to ask for while keeping federally means-tested benefits can be a challenge. That is why IAble has a quick and easy way for your loved ones to support your IAble account directly, with Ugift®!
Ugift makes the process easy by providing each account with a unique gifting code, which can be shared with friends and family to make direct contributions.
All gift contributions using Ugift are invested into the account owner’s IAble account and can be used to pay for qualified disability expenses, and if a gift-giver is an Iowa taxpayer
As Treasurer, part of my job is to support Iowa’s businesses and financial institutions. One way we do that is through Invest in Iowa, a program offering deposits of State dollars to financial institutions to get low-cost funds into Iowa’s communities. Using an online auction process, approved Iowa financial institutions can place electronic bids on available funds.
- Auctions for six-month certificates of deposit (CDs) happen on the second Tuesday of January, April, July and October.
- Auctions for one-year term CDs occur in February and August.
Prior to an auction, participants from financial institutions must register by visiting BidIowa.com.
With the cost of education on the rise, the best way to prepare is to start saving today! One way to start is by investing in an ISave 529 account. Another great way is to enter our Winter Giveaway!

“Staying Golden” isn’t just for Ponyboy. Teachers, whether they are teaching The Outsiders or the alphabet, deserve recognition for their hard work and influence. This is why ISave 529 is teaming up with WHO 13 to present teachers with the Golden Apple Award to celebrate their commitment to educating our children.
Each month, ISave 529 and WHO 13 award a teacher with the Golden Apple Award. October’s recipient was special education teacher Dylan Lame, from Lamoni. “Just seeing them getting better, even if it’s a little bit at a time. Just even that little bit at a time is a big growth for the students I work with,” Lame said.
