John, you, and all our members, help Alabama Arise progress toward our shared vision of a better Alabama. I want to introduce you to a member from my organizing region: Brian Johnson. Brian joined Arise more than eight years ago. He found us through his work as a consumer and disability advocate with the Independent Living Center of Mobile, an Arise member group. Brian’s favorite thing about being a member is the avenue that Arise creates for a cohesive advocacy movement on the issues most important to him:
“I am a wheelchair user and was born with muscle dystrophy. I rely on public transportation to get around, and have always known that I have to be able to afford going to the doctor. If you don’t have insurance, doctors don’t want to see you. We’re all in the same boat – everyone has issues that affect them, and being a part of Arise gives the opportunity to communicate with your representative in a shared voice with the other members about issues like transit and health care. When we are unified, we can get a lot accomplished.”

As Arise’s organizer for southwest Alabama, which includes Mobile, I am lucky to work closely with Brian and other members like you to accomplish our policy goals. Brian and I have hosted events for the consumers and staff at Independent Living Center, and I have seen firsthand his dedication to our work.
Brian is an incredible advocate. He engages people he knows with our issues by inviting them to our events, sharing information and fact sheets and writing to his state legislators. With your support, we can connect with and empower even more advocates like Brian across Alabama.
