Dear John,

Sometimes I see comments on CODEPINK’s videos saying, “These women are only ever around when Republicans are in charge,” insinuating we are fair-weather activists who are silent on world issues when Democrats are in charge. I’ve always found that funny. Two years ago, I locked eyes with President Biden in Illinois and demanded he call for a ceasefire, reminding him that 10,000 Palestinians had been killed with U.S. weapons. It’s been twenty years since I first saw CODEPINK in San Francisco protesting the Iraq war — a war my brother was deployed to. Even when I was in middle school during the Obama years, I remember seeing Medea Benjamin on the news getting arrested for protesting the drone wars.

When I decided to dedicate my life to ending wars and militarism, I gravitated towards CODEPINK because I knew they would continue opposing U.S. wars no matter what, just as they had been doing my entire life. I often think about who was supporting and building organizations like CODEPINK when I was a kid — those people brought me into the peace movement because they helped make CODEPINK so visible, principled, and inspiring.

This Giving Tuesday your gift can make peace visible in powerful ways:

After three years helping to lead this organization, I can assure you that there’s no place I’d rather be. Of course, we are staring down a number of threats as we struggle for a better future. You all know that Donald Trump is sending the National Guard and masked ICE agents into the streets all around the country to scare people into silence. They’re trying to intimidate us in every way possible, but we aren’t afraid.

What’s great about being part of CODEPINK is that we are not controlled by government grants or billionaires, meaning we can engage in real, immersive anti-imperialist education without having to tone down our language. We call a spade a spade — and have done so for over twenty years.

The only power we are accountable to is the power of the people, because it’s peace activists like you that keep us going. Your support over the years has given us everything we need to build out confident, thoughtful, and courageous peace activists. For every peace activist you help build up through your support of CODEPINK, ten more are activated as our chapters (over 50 of them now!) work tirelessly to educate and inspire their local communities.

I’m not just speaking in metaphors here. If you go on our social media and see our protests and disruptions, it’s not just Medea or Jodie or Ann. It’s also young people they've inspired over their decades of activism, including myself!

I would be remiss to say that I know times are incredibly tough for so many right now. Trump is taking away SNAP benefits under the auspices that “money ran out” from the government shutdown, while conveniently funding the masked men that are terrorizing our neighbors. Because of the looming threat of the National Guard being deployed nationwide, especially as the midterm elections approach, CODEPINK’s mission is more than ever rooted in our struggle here at home.

People have been saying that the chickens are coming home to roost after decades of U.S. wars abroad. Not only are we preparing to educate and organize against this blatant repression, our Local Peace Economy projects are working overtime to support communities that the government is neglecting. Your support for CODEPINK will be able to support all those missions: ending war, fighting Trump’s repression, and uplifting critical mutual aid networks that work to fill in the gaps.

Support CODEPINK in 2026 — we need you more than ever.
