Dear John

We’ve been really encouraged by how many people have signed the church leaders’ open letter, urging the Government to lift the absurd two-child limit in social security. More than 100 churches have signed already.

Sign the open letter to the Chancellor

We’ve also been greatly encouraged by news reports this week suggesting that the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, has been listening and may be about to remove the rule.

This would right a huge injustice, which has always been out of keeping with the long-held principles of the UK’s shared social security system. Never before had children been denied support, just because they have more than one sibling.

Church leaders from all denominations have been among the most consistent opponents of these rules, ever since they came in eight years ago.

The signs are promising, but the Budget is still two weeks away and we can’t take it for granted. What’s more, the letter calls for this to be the beginning of a wider renewing of the social security system. We need a system that gives families a very real opportunity to move forward, and gives children the best chance of reaching their full potential.

Please ask your local church leaders this week to sign the letter.

Sign the letter now

Best wishes
