In a free state, law enforcement cannot function well unless it has the support of the local community. Unfortunately today, we are seeing less and less of this.

What has been happening during the coronavirus pandemic is that local police are being called on to enforce edicts from state governments that have no basis in law. Being a police officer is hard enough and now they are put in the difficult position of having to enforce these edicts that are really only camouflaged as laws.

A key point in The Federalist Papers ([link removed]) was that when a law is passed that violates the Constitution, it is null and void and has no effect. While the government can recommend certain actions by the citizens, it may not order them to comply with edicts that violate the constitution.

Because of this we are seeing more and more Americans questioning the “right” of their local officials to enforce certain aspects of the controls over the people in relation to the right to assemble and quarantine. This is causing a great strain between the local officers and the communities they serve.

Our Founders dealt with disease too and made no exceptions to their prohibitions on infringing on the rights of the people. Yet during today's virus pandemic, the government has had no problem in trampling over our rights and liberties.

While law enforcement officers swear an oath to the federal Constitution and their state constitutions, few ever read them to see just what it is they are swearing to uphold. Unfortunately there are officers out there today that have little understanding of what the Constitution holds.

The good news is that there are still many officers out there that are still adhering to their oath to follow the Constitution. We are seeing more and more officers that are refusing to comply with the orders to enforce unconstitutional coronavirus edicts. However, we need more!

It is imperative that we do all that we can to continue to inform members of our local police of the provisions in the bill of Rights and how the infringements of these rights by local police can do great harm.

As more officers stand up to unconstitutional edicts, we also need to continue to inform our fellow patriots on the importance of supporting our local police and keeping them independent. We, as law-abiding citizens, must help to prevent a distance arising between our local police and us.
