Dear John,
Last Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court was petitioned to consider a challenge to the 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges decision -- the ruling that imposed same-sex marriage nationwide.
The case, brought by Kim Davis, a former clerk in Rowan County, Kentucky, sought to appeal punitive damages imposed on her for refusing to issue a same-sex marriage license and, at the same time, reconsider one of the most egregious Supreme Court rulings in recent memory.
Yesterday, the high court denied her petition.
It's time for us as believers -- and as citizens -- to take an honest look at what has happened in the decade since America attempted to "redefine" marriage.
At the time, it was argued that people should have the right to marry whomever they love, because what two consenting adults do in the privacy of their own bedroom has no bearing on the rest of society. That was a lie then, and it is still a lie today. But it has also given birth to a myriad of other lies and deception to the point that now we are told a person can declare a gender totally opposite to biological reality and everyone must celebrate it.
Obergefell opened the floodgates of sexual confusion. If two men or two women could get married, why not three people? Why could a man not become a woman?
Today, we are seeing the awful fruit of the tree that was planted in 2015:
- An explosion of sexual confusion and promiscuity
- Increased levels of homosexual activity
- Transgender ideology and procedures that are scarring thousands of people, including children made in God's image
- The erasure of girls' sports and spaces
- Pride parades and drag events exposing children to shameless immorality
The truth is, marriage -- and God's design for sexuality within marriage -- was never just a private relationship. Marriage is public, holy, and deeply influential in society.
But it has taken time for our culture to see what the Scriptures made clear from the beginning: sin is deceptive and ruinous. As a culture, we must reject it.
FRC has been in this fight since our founding. Defending God's design for family is at the core of our mission -- it's in our name.
For decades, we have never compromised or deviated from the truth of God's Word about marriage -- the cornerstone of the family. We refuse to bend the knee to culture, and as a result, we've been slandered, canceled, and even targeted by an armed assassin who the Southern Poverty Law Center inspired because of our stand for biblical marriage.
But no matter the threats we face, I promise you, FRC will never shrink back from defending biblical truth-- which includes the definition of marriage and human sexuality.
We stood against Obergefell, and later in 2022, when Congress introduced and passed the so-called "Respect for Marriage Act" which enshrined same-sex marriage into federal law, we rallied opposition.
Not only did the bill seek to codify Obergefell into federal law, it also created a private right of action that could be used to target faith-based individuals and ministries seeking to honor God's design for marriage.
We educated lawmakers about its deceptive language, exposed hidden loopholes that jeopardize the religious freedom of believers, and mobilized Christians nationwide to take a stand for truth.
Whether on Capitol Hill, or on the airwaves of America -- FRC, with your support -- will continue to declare biblical truth -- in season and out of season! (2 Timothy 4:2)
Will you stand with us today as we lead our culture back to God's definition of marriage and sexuality?
I SUPPORT FRC'S MISSION
Ten years ago, I visited Kim Davis when she spent six days in jail for refusing to compromise on biblical truth. I let her know that she did not stand alone and encouraged her to keep fighting against cultural and moral compromise.
That same year, I was proud to present her with FRC's "Cost of Discipleship" award at our Values Voter Summit -- because it takes courage to defy the world's culture and stand on God's Word when others are pressuring you to cave.
Sadly, many pastors and churches could use more of Kim Davis's courage. Within the church, confusion about God's design for marriage is deepening.
FRC's 2023 Social Issues and Worldview Survey revealed that while many believers still affirm biblical clarity on several moral issues, far fewer say the Bible is "clear and decisive" about homosexuality or transgenderism.
In other words, at the very moment our culture needs truth the most, the church itself is wavering in its confidence in proclaiming it. If a county clerk -- a woman who spent much of her life as a registered Democrat -- can see this issue clearly from a biblical worldview after coming to know Christ as her Savior, why can't those who are supposedly called to lead the people of God?
Thankfully, the tide in the broader culture may be beginning to shift. A recent YouGov poll found that public support for same-sex marriage has fallen to 54% -- the lowest level in more than a decade. Now, roughly one-third of Americans say homosexual marriage should be illegal -- a truth FRC has stood on for decades, even before Obergefell.
This is a pivotal moment for believers. People are searching for answers -- but if the church is unclear about what Scripture teaches, we will miss this opportunity to point hearts back to God's truth.
That's why FRC is working diligently to help believers think biblically about marriage, sexuality, and gender -- through our Center for Biblical Worldview, our Stand on the Word Bible reading plan and resources, and through events like our recent Watchmen on the Wall Pastors' Conference in Washington, D.C.
Your support today helps FRC continue this critical work -- shaping hearts, emboldening the church, and influencing public policy to defend marriage, families, and religious liberty.
DEFEND BIBLICAL TRUTH WITH FRC
Regardless of what the Supreme Court decided this week, this issue is not going away. Roe was challenged over two dozen times before it was overturned, and each case brought against it was able to chip away at its shaky legal footing.
In 1999, I worked with the now Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, then a young attorney in private practice, to pass a law that would form the foundation for the Louisiana Abortion Clinic Regulation Act, which went to the Supreme Court just before the Dobbs decision overturned Roe. Righting the wrong of Roe took nearly 50 years of perseverance and grit to see results.
We did not, have not, and will not give up on the sanctity of life, and we must not give up on God's design for marriage. We must continue to stand firm with confidence because we have a singular advantage: we are on the side of truth. God, the author and embodiment of truth, always wins in the end.
Evil may triumph for a season, but it is impossible to suppress the moral law of God forever.
Thank you for standing with us in this ongoing fight.
