John,
Today means a lot to me and my family. My dad served during Vietnam. His stories about service and sacrifice shaped who I am. He helped me see who I wanted to be, and I miss him today and every day.
I am grateful for the selfless commitment of our servicemembers who sacrificed so much for our nation. In fact, my first campaign stop in Milwaukee was with a group of local veterans to hear their struggles with access to health care, benefits, and jobs. We owe them better — and as Wisconsin’s Governor, I’ll fight to deliver.
More than 300,000 veterans call Wisconsin home, and we’re not doing enough for them. Some of the state’s programs for veterans are restricted to those who served more than six months — even if a member served in wartime, if the duration of their service was less than six months and one day, they don’t qualify for some benefits. As your Governor, I’ll work to change that.
On this day, in this politically fraught time when we are searching for ways to come together, I hope you’ll join me in extending heartfelt thanks to all veterans who have courageously served our country.
Thank you,
Sara
