This wasn't the email I planned to send today.
I planned to share more about our efforts to empower cities to tackle gun violence (thank you to the 1,000+ CeaseFirePA activists who already emailed their senators about this!). But right now, I need your help to fight misinformation.
On Wednesday, Nov. 12, the PA House Judiciary is going to vote on HB 1891, a bill that will help stop gun trafficking. This bipartisan legislation would make a small change — it’d require gun dealers to submit faster and more efficient electronic records rather than mail a physical record of each firearm sale to the state police, which can take several months.
To be clear, recording firearm sales and reporting them to state police is something gun dealers are already doing. But the paper-based system is slow, error-prone, and stops law enforcement from having the most up-to-date information when they’re trying to stop gun trafficking.
Based on what we saw last session, I can tell you that some gun extremists and their allies are going to start spreading misinformation about this very straightforward legislation. They’re going to lie and say that modernizing an existing process is creating a “gun registry.”
Friend, I need your help to fight this lie.
