After 41 days of Washington Democrats’ shutdown, the Senate has finally found an off-ramp to reopen the government. I am travelling back to Washington, D.C. to vote on the bipartisan agreement that advances three appropriations bills to be signed into law and allows the House to return to our legislative business. If you would like more information on what I am working on this week, be sure to follow me on social media. I do not serve in Congress to be a caretaker in the slow demise of America— I serve to fight and work to make it stronger. That’s what I am doing while believing our brightest days are yet to come. The price of freedom is not free, and we are forever indebted to the men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms. Today and every day, we remember and honor those who have defended our nation over the last 249 years and protected the liberties and freedom we enjoy as Americans. We do not take your service for granted. Thank you, veterans for all you have done to make America the greatest and freest country in the world. Putting an End to Washington Democrats' Political Games After more than 40 days of unnecessary delay, the Senate has finally taken a step toward reopening the federal government. The House passed a clean, non-partisan continuing resolution in September to keep the government open at current funding levels. Since then, Senate Democrats voted down that CR 14 separate times, choosing political theatre over the well-being of Americans. This weekend, the Senate finally agreed to a funding extension that reopens the federal government, allows vulnerable families to receive the benefits they depend on, and pays the hard-working men and women in the federal workforce. It’s time to end the political posturing, restore regular order, and get back to business. This agreement was the right thing to do, and I am grateful the shutdown is nearing an end. Interviewing Students for our Military Academies Last month, I hosted our fifth annual Big First Congressional Military Academy Nomination Day in Abilene, Kansas—the hometown of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. It’s one of my greatest honors in Congress to nominate students from the Big First to attend our nation’s service academies. A panel of distinguished Kansas leaders helped interview some of the brightest, most committed young men and women in our district—students who are eager to serve their country and lead the next generation of military officers. I'm grateful to the panel for sharing their time and experience, and to the students for their willingness to answer the call to serve. The dedication and character these students displayed give me great confidence in the future of our country and its next generation of leaders.
