Dirty Deal: Hochul approved Williams NESE pipeline

This past Friday, November 8, the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation put its stamp on the grossly polluting, marine-life-threatening, very expensive, and utterly unnecessary Williams NESE fracked gas pipeline. Unless lawsuits stop it, the Oklahoma fossil fuel company Williams will build this off our shores, and the investor-owned utility company National Grid will bill its customers for the cost of construction plus Williams' return on investment of more than 15%. This follows similar decisions by Governor Hochul. On November 7 she reversed a decision that would have shuttered a gas plant powering a cryptomining operation on Seneca Lake. On November 4 she announced she's considering delaying the implementation of the All-Electric New Buildings Act. After a court ruled on October 30 that she was failing to carry out the state's primary climate law, the CLCPA, she announced that she would fight the ruling in court. As gubernatorial candidate Antonio Delgado said Friday: “This decision is a moral failure and a dirty deal with Trump. By siding with Donald Trump and his fossil-fuel allies, Governor Hochul has once again put politics and profit ahead of people. She has ignored the science, dismissed the public, and broken faith with the tens of thousands of New Yorkers who spoke out against this pipeline. Leadership means more than hiding behind process, it means having the courage to say no when it matters.” Photo illustration by New York Focus.

Hooray for Mamdani, new green mayor!

350BK is thrilled to see Mamdani win with a mandate to create an inclusive city that prioritizes the working class over billionaires. He is also a climate leader with a solid history of organizing against peaker plants, for the All Electric Buildings Act, and was an initial co-sponsor of the Build Public Renewables Act. His campaign championed free buses, green schools, enforcing Local Law 97 and framed climate policies as a central, quality-of-life issue. In a moment when the federal government has set the country back decades on environmental policies, we are inspired by the unlimited potential of a climate leader in City Hall. Tell our new mayor to invest in Green, Healthy Schools

The greatest city in the world has 75+ year old school buildings that are too hot, too cold, too moldy, too leaky, and poorly ventilated. Rising temperatures and extreme weather are making this crisis worse, and schools are harming our health and our education, most of all in disadvantaged communities. Tell our new mayor we want Green, Healthy Schools with improved energy efficiency and powered by solar energy.
