Groyne at Puerto Escondido Partially RemovedÂ
Puerto Escondido, México. Preliminary studies carried out by a coalition of organizations including Save The Waves, Wildcoast and the Stewardship Council of Puerto Escondido World Surfing Reserve have shown that the groyne may have trapped sand leading to a widening beach at Zicatela, and consequently, deteriorating wave quality and closeout conditions.

New Global Guide Sets Best Practices for Protecting Surf Ecosystems
Save The Waves Coalition, the Peruvian Society for Environmental Law (SPDA), and Conservation International — have released the “Guide of Best Practices for Surf Ecosystem Conservation,” the most comprehensive global resource of its kind, funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The guide includes 30 case studies and examples from more than 25 surf breaks across more than 15 countries — from South America’s Pacific coast to Southeast Asia, Australia, and Africa. Its goal: to serve as a global reference for protecting waves and the rich ecosystems around them — providing decision-makers, coastal communities, businesses, and the surf community with practical tools and real-world examples to support conservation and sustainable development.
