Eight Senate Democrats, under the leadership of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, betrayed the American people by voting to reopen the government—with none of the concessions from Republicans on health care that constituents have been demanding.1
MoveOn members have been clear in their demand for Democrats to step up in this moment and protect everyday people from skyrocketing health insurance costs that would put health care out of reach for millions. But instead of standing firm and continuing to fight against these disastrous cuts, Schumer ignored us, the people.
We directly asked what MoveOn members thought about Chuck Schumer’s leadership in this moment, and the results were unequivocal: Over 80% of MoveOn members believe he should step aside.

Millions of families are now left without guarantees of affordable health care through the Affordable Care Act, because Schumer threw away all the leverage Democrats had in negotiations. Democratic leadership conceded our power and sent a disturbing message that the Trump administration’s bullying and cruelty will continue to go unchecked.
We are facing unprecedented attacks on our democracy as the Trump administration acts with impunity, violating our civil liberties and dismantling our social safety nets. We need bold leadership that can meet this moment. And Schumer has made it clear that he is not fit.

Trump and Republicans are determined to strip away access to health care by driving up costs, and they have used the shutdown to inflict maximum pain on the American people. They stopped SNAP payments, furloughed federal employees, and nearly halted air travel by withholding pay from air traffic controllers and TSA agents.2
Republicans control every branch of government. It is their responsibility to figure out a path forward. Democrats have been clear that they will negotiate with Republicans to end the shutdown—but until this weekend, had made sure gutting the Affordable Care Act and putting people’s health care in jeopardy were off the table.
The concessions that Schumer and the eight Senate Democrats who voted to reopen the government made will cost people their lives. Researchers estimate that nearly 50,000 people will die every year as a direct result of these cruel cuts.3
Schumer has had nearly 10 months to show us whether he can meet the moment. We have three more years of the Trump administration. The stakes are high, and we need leaders who will step up with enough courage, conviction, and chops to effectively counter Trump.
Schumer is NOT that leader.
