Dear John,
On this Veterans Day, we pause to honor the men and women who have worn our nation’s uniform. Veterans Day was first observed as Armistice Day , marking the end of World War I on November 11, 1918. It later became a day to honor ALL who have served, in distinction to Memorial Day, which remembers those military members who sacrificed their lives in service to our nation.
But honoring veterans requires more than words and ceremonies. It means acting to ensure that every veteran has the support and dignity they have earned. Every day, about 17 veterans die by suicide , a heartbreaking and persistent tragedy that spans decades and administrations. Homelessness remains an ongoing crisis among veterans. Post-traumatic stress affects an estimated 12% to 15% of all veterans, as many as 2.4 million Americans , leading to challenges with employment, addiction, and housing. And in the past decade, our nation deported more than 100 combat veterans and an unknown number of other veterans . The people who have risked their lives in service to this country.
We can do better.
We must advocate for and support policies that will:
* Expand access to healthcare, including mental healthcare, for all.
* Invest in long-term solutions to homelessness.
* Ensure veterans, and all Americans, can pursue education and training for today’s economy.
* Protect the rights of non-citizen veterans to remain in the nation they served.
* Defend the right to vote . A right paid for with the blood of generations of veterans.
This Veterans Day, honor their service with action:
✅ Contact your elected officials and urge them to support stronger VA funding and veteran housing programs.
✅ Volunteer with a local veterans organization or shelter. Visit the Delaware Office of Veteran Services [[link removed]] to find out about events that you can support.
✅ Vote for leaders who fight for the values our veterans defended — dignity, opportunity, and democracy.
Words honor the past. Action honors their sacrifice.
