Today is Veterans Day, a day when we honor those who answered the call to defend our nation.
I’m reflecting on the sacrifices of all of our veterans — including the Navajo code talkers and Bataan Death March survivors who sacrificed so much for New Mexico and our country in World War II. And I’m thinking of my father, a veteran and a lineman.
But we owe so much more than words of gratitude. Our veterans and their families are owed action.
Throughout my time in the Senate, I have fought hard to make sure we keep our promises to our veterans. I secured funds to support the success and growth of veteran-owned businesses in New Mexico. And I co-led passage of the PACT Act to provide more care and benefits to those exposed to toxins during their time in the military.
Donald Trump doesn’t respect our service members and veterans. He called Marines “suckers.” He has fought tooth and nail to NOT fund SNAP benefits, which over a million veterans depend on. He laid off thousands from the Department of Veterans Affairs, and left millions more veterans in limbo amid a month-long government shutdown his party created.
I can tell you we will never be able to do right by these patriotic Americans as long as we have a commander in chief who is clearly not up to the task.
Today and every day, we must remember the sacrifices that brave Americans have made and continue to make today so we can live in a country that stands for democracy.
To all veterans, their families, and active service members defending our freedoms, thank you for your courage and selflessness.
Sincerely,
Martin Heinrich
